Spectacular 6M

Math Warriors By Mac So our teacher Miss Major came up with this club  called ‘math warriors’. It’s basically when you go to the classroom every wednesday and learn or play math related games. Math Warriors is pretty fun because you learn math and play games at the same time and it helps kids to learn better when they are having fun. Sometimes you get pretzles or other snacks but those are on rare occasions, I recommend going because it’s really fun. My favorite game that we played at math warriors was the multiplicattion game where you basically do all the facts up to 9 on a clocked type table that we taped on a wall, the teams had to run up and write a multiple of a number shown on the clock and whichever team does all of them first, wins.

THE CRIME SCENE ‘ESCAPE ROOM’ By Kristina On Thursday June 21 and Friday June 22, 6M had to come up with their own crime scene in groups. After the groups had made up their crime scenes, Miss Major will ask a group on a list of people who is going. They will set up their crime scene however they want, then 3 different groups will go in and try to figure out the crime scene of that group or what happend. They will have 7 minutes to figure out their crime. When their time is out, they will go out of the ‘escape room’ and tell that group what they think happened. If they get the crime scene right the group will just say, “yes you got it right!” and if you got it wrong they will just say “no you didn’t get it right”. After all the crime scene are done Miss Major will read all the crime scenes and what actually happened. I really enjoyed this activity because we had to use our brains to solve different crime scenes!

The gliding parachutes in grade 6! By Daiki June 8th, 2018 We were at the top of the stairs at the new school and we all had are magnificent idea of parachutes and we used our creative brain set and used materials that we usually use for shopping. We first learned the forces of air like thrust,drag,lift and weight. It was a fun learning and I honestly liked learning about the four forces of flight. One of the best part was when we put a egg in the carrier and let the parachutes drift some didn't work as they thought and the eggs broke into many pieces with the yoke coming out it was one of are funnest science experiments. I love science!           

Baseball with the Seniors By Quintin Thursday June 7th, 6M went to the highschool field to play baseball with the seniors. Everybody was determined to beat the seniors for the first time. Some of the seniors would get some of the grade 6 to run for them while they swing the bat, after everyone's effort the seniors won again! Everybody was ready to eat lunch after swinging the bat and running. It was a great morning!

Dancing Up a Storm By Logan BES was dancing up a storm in the gym on friday in a well deserved dance show after. A well deserved dance show show runned by kim the dance teacher it was an amazing site to see. After all the students practised so hard. One of the favorites was the grade six dance because of the choice of song and the difficulty of making a river all in sync with all the students. One of my favorite grades dance was the grade sevens because all the teachers joined. Many students look forward to it happening again next year.

Marching to the Marsh By: Tia Last friday we went on a field trip to the cave and basin at first we were going to go and do the hike at  surprise corner on tunnel mountain but there was an aggressive elk around the area. So we all took a bus to the cave and basin, once we were there we started to identify different types of leaves and plants. After we finished our first worksheet we walked down the boardwalk to the marsh by the bow river. When we got down to the marsh we started to identify the bark,leaves and needles on a willow and a spruce tree. After we finished the worksheet we go some free time down there to look at the fish and plants in the marsh then we walked over to the museum and looked around in there. Finally it was lunch time and we ate at the picnic tables once we were done eating we went to the rec grounds and had some free time and went back to class.

Paper Airplanes Soar Through Grade 6!  By Ben          On Thursday june 2 Ms.Majors class went flying through the hallways with their paper airplanes. Ms.Majors class was having a competition to see how far and how accurate the paper airplanes could get. The paper airplanes ended up hitting the walls going straight and going far. They went far because of the thrust that the thrower was giving them and because the light wind pushed them.They smashed into the walls because of the wind current wich they caught. They went all over the place because they were too light. One paper airplane was really heavy and that was the airplane that was most successful because it was aerodynamic.The paper airplane that was most accurate was the same airplane because it cut through the air and was heavy so the light wind didn't take it away. So the most successful plane ended up being the heaviest plane which weirdly looked like a dart. That is the end of this majestically flying blog.

The Canmore Museum By Maddy     Last week, the grade 6’s went to the Canmore museum. We talked about some characters that lived in Canmore.  Each person had a twin that was the same character. We had to introduce the character that we were to some other people. It was hard for me to describe my character because I speak french. We also learned how the Canmore community passed some laws. To help us to understand, we picked a group that you wanted to be in (wildlife, medicine, construction). After, we decided on the laws as a group. Finally, we took a look at the museum. The trip was very good.

Iroquois decision making By: Mairi This past week we have been working on learning the decision making process for the Iroquois. In class, we worked on either a flowchart or sketch notes of the decision making process. A lot of people didn't completely understand, so we tried it. We had to decide what day to hold our science test. We were divided up into tribes, Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga and Onondaga. First, the tribes of Mohawk and Seneca made a decision by consensus. They chose wednesday. Then the tribes of Oneida and Cayuga come to a consensus. They chose tuesday. And the Onondaga chose monday. So we tried again. That time, we switched. Mohawk and Seneca chose tuesday, and Cayuga and Oneida chose wednesday. The Onondaga chose monday again. So we tried again. This time, Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga and Mohawk agreed on tuesday. Moon Phases That Are Out Of This World! By Venince In Science we are studying Sky Science. We learned about the moon phases by using Oreo Cookies. Miss Major put us into partners and my partner was Erin. Erin did the moon phases by using the Oreos (because I don’t like Oreos) and I did the moon phases too but by drawing it. I remember the moon phases now! Everyone is enjoyed it and when they get finished they got to eat the Oreo cookie. I will say that I really enjoy making moon phases even though I don’t like Oreos!

Building a Model By Erin        Almost every science period Sandra Becker from the university from Calgary  comes to our class to do research, then we go to the makerspace lab to work on our models. Our models are a deep thinking question about sky science that we did research on, to eventually start building a model to show the answer to our question. Some of our questions changed after doing some research. We have to use flexible thinking because maybe the model that we had in mind doesn't work, so we have to change it to make it work. At the end of every work period we write in our log books. We use the log book because it shows our thinking throughout the process of making our models.         My question is, why is there microgravity in space? My question has changed after doing some research. It is now why do planets orbit. This relates back to my original question because the answer is because of the sun's gravity. Making Maps with Lynx By Darby In the morning Lynx taught us how to use a compass and some survival skills for if your lost we also talked about how to use the stars to tell the directions. When we got to the cascade gardens we split into groups and spread out. We all made maps to  and hid a coloured marker for the other groups to find. We used a compass to tell the direction (baring) and degrees and we used paces to mark how many steps to take. Lynx told us about your dominant foot and if you plan to walk in a straight line you need to choose a landmark or else you will end up walking in a circle. The best part was getting to choose where you want to make your map and                                       using teamwork to get it done and working. The most challenging part was making sure your compass is facing the right direction, keeping count on your paces and making sure it makes sense. Book Cafe By Amber This week, Miss Major had something special planned for her class. She started the BookCafe! The purpose for the book cafe is for students to find the right book to read that is on their level. We were given a sticky note that had a coloured dot on it. She gave us those sticky notes to find a certain book that has a sticky note on it with same colour dot. We were even given menus, where we can write down short summaries and rate  the books that we read. Miss Major, also gave us all snacks everytime we rotated to a different book. She gave us an appetizer (magic reading beans), an entree (book worms) and dessert (bookmarks). Overall, it was a really fun experience and we got to learn a lot about how to choose books for our literacy circles.

The Lorax Presentation By Mickale Kids from 6M has been doing a project about the book called “The Lorax”. They have to make an argument in certain roles and present it to “The Grickle Grass Council”. Miss Major kept a secret on who the mayor will be for our “Grickle Grass Council”. Eventually when it was the day to present our projects to the council, the mayor was KAREN SORENSEN!!! We told her what our arguments were and why we don’t want the thneed factories and why we do need the thneed factories, once Karen Sorensen heard our arguments, she decided to keep the thneed factories, but, they have to ask permission to the town/city if they could build one there. They also need to make sure that the animals and plants were not causing any trouble from the thneed factory. The council agreed too (Craig). So, the thneed will be still built in a good way and no harm.
